Effective sickness absence management can reduce the level of sickness absence and help in assisting absent employees returning to work. We will look at those areas of absence management that often cause employers difficulties and provide practical tips and guidance on how to better deal with these including maintaining contact with employees, the importance of up to date medical evidence, dealing with sick pay properly, accrual of holiday and dealing with the impact of PHI and other benefits.

This session will look at how employers can utilise their benefit packages to help to minimise sickness absence , and in particular how the better use of both new and existing Employee Benefits offerings can help. Topics covered will include the ageing workforce, usage of the new Fit for Work scheme, Employee Assistance Plans, Early Intervention tools, and Financial Education in the workplace.

An occupational health report is often critical for effectively dealing with sickness absence. In this last session, we look at how employers can make better use of these reports including: what questions should OH be asked?; what process should be followed?; what do you do if the condition or outlook is unclear?; what adjustments do you need to make and for how long?; what can you do if the employee doesn’t get better as expected?; what about the poorly motivated worker?; and how the overall social context of ill health can have an impact.
